Handmade in Naples vs. the Big "Natural" Brands

Walk down the soap aisle and almost everything says natural now. The word is not regulated, so a bar can say natural and still be mostly synthetic detergent with a plant on the label. Here is what actually separates a small-batch bar made here in Southwest Florida from the big brands selling the same promise.

Batch size changes what is possible. A national brand makes soap by the ton, which means the formula has to survive months in a warehouse and on a shelf. That pushes them toward hardeners, synthetic foaming agents, and preservatives that keep a bar identical for a year. We make soap in small batches and sell it within months, so we can leave the natural glycerin in and skip the additives that exist only for shelf life.

Glycerin is the clearest example. It forms naturally when soap is made, and it draws moisture to your skin. It is also valuable, so large manufacturers often pull it out to sell separately, then sell you lotion to make up for the dryness. A handmade bar keeps it.

Then there is what we leave out. No synthetic dyes, no fillers to bulk up the bar cheaply. When a batch is scented, it is a real fragrance or essential oil, not a mystery blend hiding a list of chemicals you cannot see.

Being local matters in a way that is easy to overlook. You can find us, talk to us, and see who makes the thing you are putting on your skin every day. If a bar breaks you out, there is a person on the other end who wants to know, not a 1-800 number. That accountability is the whole point of buying from a small maker.

None of this means a drugstore bar will hurt you. It means you are buying two different things. One is engineered to last on a shelf and ship cheaply. The other is made in small runs by people a few miles away who use it themselves. If that difference matters to you, that is who we are.
