Soy Wax vs. Paraffin: Why It Matters What's in Your Candle

Walk into any big-box store and you'll find shelves full of inexpensive candles. They smell great in the package, but light them up and something changes — a faint, waxy smell, a thin wisp of black smoke, and a burn that goes faster than you expected. What you're often burning is paraffin wax, a petroleum byproduct that most mass-market candles are made from. It's cheap and widely available, but it comes with real trade-offs for your home and your health.

What Is Paraffin Wax?

Paraffin is derived from petroleum — the same source as gasoline and diesel fuel. It's the most common candle wax in the world because it's inexpensive to produce and easy to work with. Paraffin holds fragrance well and has a strong scent throw, which is why it's the default choice for most commercial candle makers.

But when paraffin burns, it releases a mix of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including benzene and toluene — chemicals also found in diesel fuel exhaust. While a single candle isn't going to send you to the hospital, burning paraffin candles regularly in enclosed spaces can contribute to indoor air quality issues over time, especially for people with asthma, allergies, or sensitivities.

What Is Soy Wax?

Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil — a renewable, plant-based resource. It burns cleaner than paraffin, producing significantly less soot and no known toxic compounds. It's also biodegradable, which means it's kinder to the environment at every stage of its life cycle.

One of the most underrated benefits of soy wax? It burns cooler and slower than paraffin. That means a soy candle will typically last 30–50% longer than a paraffin candle of the same size — giving you more hours of fragrance and ambiance per dollar.

The Scent Difference

Paraffin fans often argue it has a better scent throw — the ability to fill a room with fragrance. And historically, that was somewhat true. But modern soy wax formulations, especially when paired with high-quality fragrance oils and pure essential oils, produce a beautiful, clean scent throw that fills a room without the chemical undertone that paraffin can leave behind.

What to Look for When Shopping

If you're evaluating candles beyond ours, here are a few things to keep in mind:

• Check the label. If a candle doesn't specify its wax type, assume paraffin.
• Watch out for "soy blend." Some candles are labeled soy but contain 20–30% paraffin. Look for "100% soy wax."
• Look at the wick. Cotton or wood wicks burn cleaner than metal-core wicks.
• Notice the jar. Heavy black soot on the inside of the jar is a sign of a dirty burn.

Making the switch to soy doesn't mean sacrificing scent or style. It means making a small change that's better for your air, your home, and your family.
