The Best Soaps and Scents for Hot, Sweaty Florida Summers

Summer skin has different needs than winter skin. You sweat more, you are outside more, and you shower more often, which can leave skin stripped and tight if your soap is harsh. The goal in summer is a bar that cleans off sweat and sunscreen without scrubbing your skin raw.

Scent first, because it is what most people pick on. Bright, sharp scents feel right when it is hot. Citrus, mint, and clean herbal notes read as cooling and cut through the heaviness of a humid day. Peppermint and eucalyptus do this best, since both leave a faint cool tingle as they rinse. The heavy, warm, vanilla-and-spice scents that feel cozy in December tend to feel like too much in August. Save those for the holidays.

On the bar itself, summer is when a gentle, moisturizing soap earns its place. It sounds backwards to want moisture when your skin is oily and sweaty, but harsh soap strips so hard that skin overcompensates and produces more oil. A goat milk or aloe-based bar cleans sweat and sunscreen while leaving enough moisture that your skin is not tight afterward.

For after the beach, salt and sand and sunscreen are a lot to ask one bar to handle. A salt scrub once or twice a week clears the residue and the dead skin that builds up from sun exposure. The rest of the week, a daily bar is plenty.

A few simple matches. Mornings before you head out: peppermint or citrus to wake up. After yard work or the gym: a clean herbal bar that cuts sweat. End of a beach day: scrub first, then a gentle moisturizing bar. Nights: lavender if you want to wind down.

The short rule for summer is light, clean, and gentle. Bright scents, a bar that does not strip your skin, and a scrub for the days the beach wins.
